Overview
After spending a few years and all seasons in the local landscape I find myself habitually visiting several choice locations with my photography. Some of these are good to visit all year round while others are season-specific in terms of the photographic potential that they offer, whether due to river levels, angles of sunrise / sunset etc. but still valuable to know and visit on occasion no matter what time of year it is. The landscape and the weather can throw up interesting surprises at any time and bring magic to a location when you least expect it, even in the ‘off season’.
Keen photographers and visitors to these parts have asked me often enough about where I go to take my shots that I feel now is the time to share some of my experience in the landscape of Avalon (and further afield) and to invite others to explore the same locations I know so well. My hope is that by visiting these same spaces others will connect with the landscape in the same way that I do, with patience, reverence and respect for nature.
BENEFITS / GOALS
At each location I will offer technical advice on shooting strategies that have worked for me in the past including the potential results of shooting at different points in the year or in different weather conditions. I will also offer hints and tips relevant to each specific location as well as general rules of thumb with regard to landscape photography in the broadest sense. Useful resources which you can use for planning shots in advance - especially handy if you don’t live locally - will also be shared and demonstrated as we go.
things you might need
The best way to learn is by doing so it’s best if you can bring your camera and lens(es) with you but by no means is this compulsory in order to attend since you can still pick up and absorb the salient points by observing what I do in the form of demonstrations throughout. You will probably get the best out of your experience however by bringing your own gear which might include some or all of the following:
A DSLR, Bridge or Compact camera with full manual control and a zoom lens (or interchangeable lenses) to cover a wide range of focal lengths for shooting at different ranges to achieve various different compositions and types of shots, with subjects both close up and far away (sometimes very far!)
A sturdy tripod or monopod which ideally reaches to at least head height for comfort and ease of use in the field
A remote shutter release / trigger
Small torch or headlamp (advised but not essential)
Suitable outdoor clothing for the conditions and sturdy footwear appropriate to the season
Itinerary
We will meet in Glastonbury at a convenient location where transport arrangements will be finalised depending on group size on the day. Not all locations will be easy to park at so bearing this in mind we shall endeavour to keep the number of vehicles being used to a minimum. There is ample car parking available in St John’s car park adjacent to The Gauntlet (free of charge until 9am) which can be used for your convenience while the tour is taking place.
DURATION AND COST
The total time for the tour including departure from the gallery until our subsequent return will be around 2.5 - 3 hours depending on traffic conditions. Due to time constraints I will be unable to collect / drop off people while the tour is taking place but only at the car park where we originally departed from. The cost for the photo tour is £99 per person and this is required to be paid in full to secure a booking and no later than 14 days in advance of the photo tour date.
Weather Contingency
Obviously an outdoor pursuit is weather dependent so some minor disruption can be allowed for and workshops will only be postponed / cancelled in extreme circumstances. Please refer to terms and conditions when making a booking.
